Whoo! Double posts today! 🙂 This is my third month of having ipsy. So far, I’ve loved the two Glam Bags I’ve gotten. Since I don’t know too much about beauty stuff (makeup especially), it’s great to be able to test a bunch of products without paying full price for them. I love the fact they ship their bags in hot pink bubble wrap pouches. It sticks out and there’s no chance you can miss something THAT bright! 😀
Here’s a brief overview of the company.
About Ipsy (formally MyGlam): Each bag feature 4-5 beauty items. All of the items are either deluxe samples or full size.
- There are never any of those foil packets, which is nice because I’d like to have more than 1 use of a product before I decide if I like it or not.
Cost: $10 w/free shipping (USA) | $10 + $4.95 shipping (Canada)
- It’s $110 to subscribe yearly (USA | + $54.45 shipping for Canadian subscribers), which makes each individual bag a little cheaper than with the monthly. If you choose to pay monthly or yearly, you can’t change to the other. You have to cancel your current subscription before you can switch, which if you have they yearly one, I don’t think you can cancel ’til it’s up.
Is there a “skip” option?: No, you can only cancel.

Okay, I can’t be the only one who’s a bit tired of the plain looking bags, right? This month’s bag is navy blue with a bright blue liner with white stars. I think the inner lining’s adorable, but I wished the outside had a bit more oomph to it. This is my third plain bag, which makes me a little sad seeing how October’s bag had such a fun pattern.
I wished I didn’t miss out on that one. I know the bag’s not the most important part, but it’s a nice touch. Hopefully future bags will be go in a different direction. I love fun patterns and colors! 🙂 I do like the fact that it’s taller than previous bags since you can fit taller items inside though.
The bag has to have some value on it, but not sure of an exact amount. I’d say $2-3 at most, so I’ll split the difference and value the bag at $2.50. This is the first bag that I’ve gotten that has no actual makeup, since my first two were dominated with makeup. Definitely different from those bags, but it’s a nice change.
I finally got my bag yesterday. Always an exciting day when I see the bright pink envelope in my mailbox. It arrived a bit later this month than my last two bags, but I have high hopes for the bag since my last two bags were great. Ipsy doesn’t print descriptions of each item on their cards (the coupon offers for all the brands are listed on the back), so I copied the product descriptions from their website. Let’s see if it was worth the wait! 🙂
Here’s what I got in this month’s Glam Bag:
This legendary, lightweight oil, grown organically in Morocco, is rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids. Use it as a fast absorbing daily moisturizer, or to heal and condition everything from cuticles to split ends. Plus it is 100% organic! Housed in a recyclable glass bottle.
|Sample received: $4.80 for 0.17 fl. oz. (5mL) bottle||Full price: $14 for 15mL bottle [LINK]|
|$48 for 1.7 fl oz. (50mL) bottle [LINK]|
|$96 for 4 fl oz. (120 mL) bottle [LINK]|
Comments: According to the company’s site, it’s 100% organic. I’ve heard of argon oil, but I’ve never looked into what it’s used for until now. From its description, I can definitely make use of this. I wondered why this product cost so much for such small bottles.
When I looked into it, this oil comes from a tree that only grows in Morocco and takes between 30-50 years before a tree can bear fruit. Even then, 1 tree only yields 1L of oil. If drought occurs, no fruit grows and the trees go dormant, which can last several years. The process of getting the oil is also quite labor intensive. As a result, there’s a limited supply of oil and a very high worldwide demand because of its uses in both beauty and culinary industries.
I’ve been needing an actual moisturizer, instead of using my body butter for my face (I know it’s not the best idea, but it hasn’t made my skin break out), so it’s great to get this. I also love that it’s a multi-tasker, so I get more use out of it. It may be an oil, but it doesn’t feel greasy like one.
In mere seconds after I finished rubbing the oil into my skin, it’s already been absorbed into the skin. It hydrates my skin without feeling heavy or greasy. A little goes very far. You only need several drops to cover whatever part of your body you want to use it on. It also gives your skin a slight glow as well.
The oil doesn’t have a strong scent to it, which is nice, since you can use it in conjunction with your favorite scented products and not worry about the scents clashing with each other. To me, I could barely smell it, and I have a sensitive nose too. The culinary grade version of the oil has a nutty aroma, which the cosmetic grade version seems to lack.
I definitely want to buy the full size version of this. It’s definitely not cheap by any means, but considering how it can used all over the body, it’s worth the investment. Besides, since you only use a little at a time, the bottle will last a while. Even the small bottle I got will last a good while.
Tuscan Blood Orange Body Butter is not only a highly effective antioxidant rich moisturizer that nourishes the driest of skin and helps fight off the signs of aging; it nourishes your other senses as well. The infusion of sparkling, juicy blood oranges that are highlighted with notes of red raspberry and spicy sweet Italian Mandarins take you to the beaches of the Mediterranean. Made with nature’s best moisturizers – Shea butter, almond oil and safflower oil – Pacifica’s vegan, paraben and gluten free Body Butter is a skin must have.

Comments: When I found out that body butter was going to be one of the items featured, I knew that I was going compare it to Fortune Cookie Soap’s (FCS) body butters, since theirs are the best I’ve ever tried. Regardless if the scent is good or not, I’ll still try it. Of course, smelling good’s a bonus. 🙂
Here’s a short description of the scent from Pacifica’s site:
In this delectable blend, juicy and spicy Blood Orange is offset with subtle Strawberry and Raspberry notes and grounded in fleshy Mandarin and Italian Sweet Orange. An orange connoisseur’s dream.
I wasn’t sure if it was going to smell like actual oranges or not, since it can go either way with bath products. The downside if it smells like the actual thing… I want to eat it. >.< For the month of January, this is Pacifica’s fragrance of the month and as such, the value collection in this scent is 40% off.
Smell-wise, it actually smells like real oranges and while strong, I personally didn’t find it overpowering. However, it may be a little strong to some as the scent is NOT subtle and tends to linger for a while. It’s nice since it’s hard to have fruity scents not smell fake and overly sweet, at least in my experience anyway. And now, I want to eat some blood oranges. Too bad I almost never find them… T.T
In terms of moisturizing, I have high expectations since I already have body butter I love. It feels thick and moisturizing, without feeling heavy or greasy. I found that it absorbs into the skin quickly, so the greasy feeling doesn’t last long, which is great. It’s definitely on par with my FCS body butters in that aspect. I find that the FCS ones are a little more moisturizing than this one, but it’s still a great product.
Even though I enjoyed the product, I wouldn’t buy a full size version because like with almost all scented lotions/body butters, I get bored of the scent after a while. If I found this or another scent in this size, I’d may consider it. Of course, with all the body butter I have, it might take a while for me to use it all. On the plus side, I’m set from needing to buy more for at least a good 6 months. 😛
Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play Volumizing Hairspray gives your hair moveable and unbelievable volume, lift and hold. This firm, fast-drying volumizing hairspray leaves hair manageable and super shiny while defending it against damaging UV rays. Its extra strength won’t diminish under humidity and it is great for any hair type.
|Sample received: $6.00 for a 1.6oz. can [LINK]||Full price: $17.50 for a 10.6oz. can [LINK]|
Comments: From their official website, looks like you can only buy this at salons or at their distributors throughout the US and Canada. The other option would be buying it online. The prices I’m going by for both the sample I received and full size version are from Ulta’s website, so the price may vary depending on what site you go to. Or where you buy them in person.
Sadly mine came partially damaged, so the cap’s completely unusable. The product itself still works though and luckily didn’t leak in the bag. I sent them an email regarding it, so hope to hear from them in the near future. I know there’s a high volume of email they’re getting as of recently, so I don’t mind waiting a couple extra days to hear back.
I will say that I did do a test spray to see if A, the can still worked, and B, what it smells like since I hate products that’re overly pungent. >.< Especially stuff like perfumes and hair sprays, since strong scents can make me feel slightly lightheaded. I’m happy to say that this doesn’t have a strong smell at all.
I don’t style my hair all that often and since my hair has plenty of natural volume on its own, it’s not some I need for everyday use. I don’t think I’ll actually get to try this any time soon, as a result. It’s an interesting item though and I’ve read good things about it, so hopefully I’ll get to try it in the near future. I’m giving it a “3” for now since I have no reason to try it at the moment, but I’ll update the score once I do. 🙂

Comments: You could get one of two nail polish colors in this month’s bag GlamBags — Bloody Mary (a bright red) or Frappe (a pale pink). This is the second Nailtini polish I’ve gotten in three months – first one being ‘Millionaire’ in November. Even though I love nail polish, I’m little disappointed to get this since I already have enough polishes to swatch and/or review. It could always be worse, though. 🙂
On the bright side, it’s not a dupe of anything that I already own. In fact, I think it can fit right in with the tiny neutral portion of my collection. (which I still highly lack in that category… XD) This color would be great for a classic French manicure or as a base for nail art.
At some point I’ll do a full review, but here are quick thoughts on this polish. It’s VERY thin! It goes on smooth, but very thin and runny. If you’re not careful, this can easily run over your cuticles. Judging by the first coat, I need at least 3 coats to have this be opaque. Because it’s so thin, it’s also quite prone to streaking.
The first coat looked like I just put a clear coat on my nails. I highly recommend having a white base layer before using this. Otherwise, you’ll need 3-4 (maybe even 5!) coats to make it opaque. I said it’s a creme, but after doing the quickest swatch ever, I’m beginning to think it’s a jelly, just because it’s so thin!
It dries to a super shiny finish, which is another reason it may be a jelly. The score may be updated when I do my full review, but as of right now, here’s my first impression of this polish. I don’t hate or love it. At least the color does work as a neutral in my book, so it’ll be used at some point other than my full review.
Create the perfect eye with the Get a Grip Crease Brush. First apply a neutral base eye color to the entire eyelid. Then apply a darker color to the eyelid crease – this will add dimension and depth. Finish the look by applying a shimmery highlight color to the inner corner of the eyelid and along the brow bone.

Comments: I just recently purchased a set of EcoTools makeup brushes that I love, so was really worried that I’d get a brush that I already owned. I’ve never used this brand before (but I have heard of the brand), so I don’t know how the quality of their brushes. In this bag, you would get one of three different makeup brushes by SOHO — Crease, Eyeliner, or Concealer.
I’m super excited to say that I got the crease brush, since it’s the only brush of the three that I don’t have and can actually make use of. The other two would have been okay, but I wouldn’t be using them anytime soon since I already have the EcoTools versions of those tools.
I love the ergonomic handle on the brush. It makes holding the brush quite simple and comfortable, which with this design, it’s less likely for my hands to slip out of place. The bristles are soft, not as soft as my EcoTools ones, but still soft enough where it doesn’t feel like it’s scratching my face.
I like the brush overall and it’ll definitely be in my collection for a while. I don’t think I’ll buy more brush from this brand or any brand for that matter, for a lil while since I’m still learning how to use my small current set makeup brushes.
- Box Score: 4/5 (a little inaccurate since I couldn’t use 1 of the products at this time, so I gave it the neutral score of “3”)
- Total Value: $39.79 (products only, doesn’t not include the make up bag)
Final Thoughts: Almost $40 worth for stuff for only $10?! Such a great deal and another solid bag! Even though this bag isn’t worth as much as last month’s, it’s still overall a great bag and worth way more than what I paid for it. Ipsy’s been awesome since I’ve joined and I don’t regret joining at all. Even though I may not love every item, at least I can use everything.
I’m very happy I chose to subscribe here instead of some of the other beauty boxes I’ve heard and read reviews about. They’ve really stepped up their game in recent months (seeing reviews of October’s bag convinced me to join) and I hope they can keep up the awesome job! 🙂 There’s always the risk I could hate everything I got in any given month, but hopefully that’ll never happen as long as I’m subscribed to them. *crosses fingers*
I’ve heard how some people aren’t too happy that there isn’t makeup in this bag, but I personally don’t mind. People complain when it’s the other way too (too much makeup and not enough other beauty products), so you can’t satisfy everyone. But, the variety of beauty products featured shows that ipsy listens to its customer’s input. It’s good to have variety and besides, they’re a “beauty subscription” company, not a “makeup subscription.”
I don’t know if there are any subscription boxes that are “makeup only” out there, as all of the ones I’ve seen are beauty ones, so you’re gonna get other beauty-related things that aren’t makeup. There also companies that include other things besides beauty products, such as food or other items.
Finally, with each bag, there are coupon codes, which I’ve listed below:
